When occupancy restrictions threatened Sydney's annual Fair Day, organisers turned to Micromax for a real-time people-counting solution built on Acumen³ and Xovis 3D sensors.

The Challenge

In 2022, Fair Day, the Pride celebration held each summer in Sydney's Victoria Park, faced occupancy restrictions that risked cancelling the event for a second year running. Organisers needed an automated people-counting solution that complied with the evolving rules.

As a one-day event, the solution also had to be quick to install, calibrate and remove, while being robust enough to rely on for future editions.

  • Accurate, low-latency attendee counts
  • An intuitive web-based view of occupancy levels
  • Easy access to reports for internal and external stakeholders

Our Solution

Micromax was selected to solve the occupancy management challenge. To keep numbers below the concurrent limit of 25,000 visitors, seven Xovis AI-powered 3D sensors were mounted on a temporary archway at the entrance and stitched together into a single large-area tracker.

Entry and exit data flowed into Acumen³, the Micromax visitor analytics and monitoring platform. The event control centre, including police and security teams, used a simple live occupancy meter to slow visitor flow whenever numbers approached the limit.

  • Unrivalled accuracy in complex environments
  • Fast installation, calibration and data access
  • Minimal lag for real-time responsiveness

The Outcome

The solution helped save the 2022 event, and organisers chose to use it again in 2023 and 2024. Transparent reports based on accurate, objective data supported funding requests, media engagement, and smarter event layout and scheduling.

By understanding occupancy peaks and troughs, organisers could allocate resources to keep visitors safe and comfortable, with lessons from each year improving the next.

“We use Xovis sensors because of the quality and unparalleled accuracy. They are also excellent for high-pressure events like Fair Day, where an analytics solution must be up and running in a matter of hours.”
