MULTIFUNCTION NETWORKING / COMMUNICATIONS MODULE SPEEDS AND SIMPLIFIES DEVELOPMENT OF VEHICLE-BASED APPLICATIONS
PC/104 Module combines dual CAN interface, GPS and wireless modem capabilities in a single “slot”

April 3, 2006. San Jose, CA. Diamond Systems Corporation, a leading supplier of PC/104 I/O modules and highly integrated single board computers (SBCs) that include on-board data acquisition today announced the Janus MM PC/104 expansion module that incorporates dual CAN bus interfaces and optional GPS and/or wireless modem capability on a single board. Utilizing only a single “slot” in a PC/104 stack, Janus MM enables the creation of compact vehicle-based applications that can communicate on the vehicle network, determine the vehicle’s location, and exchange information with a central location. Such applications can be found in trucks, buses, trains, delivery vehicles, police cars, ambulances and fire trucks. Janus MM can be used with a Diamond Systems Prometheus, Athena, Hercules, Morpheus or Poseidon CPU card or any of the dozens of PC/104 expandable single board computers available today in PC/104, EBX, EPIC or other form factors.

“Janus MM reduces size and weight of a mobile application, issues that are of critical importance in vehicle-based computer systems”, said Jonathan Miller, President of Diamond Systems. “Janus MM may also reduce overall system cost compared to solutions requiring three boards or external modules to provide the same functionality.”

The Janus MM carrier board provides two CAN interfaces through two Philips SJA1000T CAN Controllers. A dual UART on the module interfaces to two optional serial modules. One module can be either an 8 or 12-channel Trimble Navigation GPS receiver (Lassen SKII GPS or Lassen iQ GPS). The second module can be a MultiTech GSM/GPRS or CDMA wireless communication module (either SocketModem GSM/GPRS or SocketModem CDMA).

Janus-MM is priced at $225 in quantities of 1 to 9 units. Volume discounts apply when purchasing 10 or more units. The Janus MM carrier card, GPS and SmartModem modules are available now in prototype quantities. A design kit offering cables, antennae, software and documentation is also available. Production volume will be available in Q2, 2006. For production orders, Diamond Systems will provide Janus MM with the modules of choice installed prior to shipment.
