Initial Diamond Systems GPIO-MM release provides 64 digital I/O signals, 10 16-bit counter / timers and the ability to reconfigure in the field April 3, 2006. San Jose, CA. Diamond Systems Corporation, a leading supplier of PC/104 I/O modules and highly integrated single board computers (SBCs) that include on-board data acquisition today announced GPIO-MM, a highly flexible and reconfigurable PC/104 Digital I/O module based on a Xilinx Spartan II FPGA. Use of an FPGA to implement the digital I/O logic allows the GPIO-MM hardware to be reprogrammed, in the field if necessary, to serve multiple PC/104 I/O applications with different digital I/O requirements. GPIO-MM uses on-board flash memory to store the FPGA code. Memory may be reprogrammed using a JTAG interface. The initial release of the module includes FPGA code to configures GPIO-MM with 48 programmable-direction digital I/O pins based on 8255 cores, 8 fixed-input signals, 8 fixed-output signals, and 10 16-bit counter / timers based on 9513 cores, supported by a 40MHz clock. Three pin headers provide a total of 100 I/O pins. This initial configuration is backwards compatible with Diamond Systems’ Quartz-MM and Garnet-MM series of fixed configuration PC/104 I/O boards. An on-board EEPROM provides 256 bytes of user accessible storage, typically used for configuration information. GPIO MM operates over an extended range of -40°C to +85°C. GPIO-MM is supported by Diamond Systems’ Universal Software Driver, which operates with popular embedded operating systems including Windows 98 / 2000 / XP, Windows CE, Linux, DOS, QNX and VxWorks. A design kit offering cables, software drivers and documentation is also available. GPIO-MM is priced at $180 in quantities of 1 to 9 units. Volume discounts apply when purchasing 10 or more units. GPIO MM is available now for evaluation. Production volume will be available in 30 days.
